Basically, the title says it all. The game was playable with windows 8, but upgrading to windows 8.1 causes slowdowns: the game is mostly unplayable. The performance problems could best be described as a large drop in frame rate. I'm probably getting about 20 FPS. (sorry, I didn't capture framerate under win8 so I can't be sure how much it dropped).

I *have* updated my drivers, so that's not the problem. I've configured the game to use both OPENGL and DIRECTX rendering, and both options show slowdown. Other games haven't shown a quality drop (or if it's present, I haven't noticed it).

I'm using an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000: it's not a great card, but I would definitely say that it handled this game with 8 better than it does with 8.1

Anyways, great game! this bug is annoying and I hope you can figure it out. I'm happy to provide more info but I might be slow in responding.

We have not yet tested XStoryPlayer under windows 8.1

Most likely is that the graphics drivers are not up to date with this new version of windows.
If they are not up to date, the default windows drivers are used (and they are slow).

My only "solution" is to play XStoryPlayer with a lower version of Windows and to wait for the graphics drivers to get updated (by the manufacturer).

I was able to fix this. Re-installing the game brought my frame rate back to 60 fps.

something about the 8->8.1 upgrade caused this (other upgrade paths might be similarly affected). I don't think it's worth investigating, but hopefully this workaround can help anyone else who hits this issue.

Thanks for the update. No idea why reinstalling the game could improve the performance, but if it works it is good to know.
