When modding (I think I was changing the init\std\base\char\brain\code\run\basic_func_sex.dat file, specifically adding a new entry to <is_sex_act> section, but it could have been something else too), XStoryPlayer stopped working - every time I try to start it just shows a dialog box saying "Version mismatch". Removing the pack_dungeon directory does not help. This happened once before (don't know what triggered it then) - at that time installing the Oculus Rift DK2 patch fixed it. Reinstalling the patch does not help. Reinstalling the software did not help the previous time either, so I suspect there is something special in first time install that fixes it. Unfortunately I cannot do a real uninstall before reinstalling since the Account Manager does not support that. Previously XStoryPlayer worked without problems, so this is definitely connected to modding, but once triggered the problem remains even if the mod is removed. I wasn't trying to do anything fancy though, just changing the text files. Below are the contents of the trace.txt file. This error is not because of modding. We have a DRM check in XStoryPlayer. Please make sure you run XStoryPlayer on the same machine you downloaded it on. Also make sure your ethernet dongle is still plugged in. You dont need internet connection to play, but you need an enabled network. If it does not work out contact us in the support section.

This is a bit of a nightmare on a laptop with 4 network interfaces (wifi, cell data, ethernet, and bluetooth) and multiple configurations that depend on where I am. I'm guessing I'm SOL if I change the MAC address on whichever interface XSP is looking for?
I wish I'd seen this *before* deleting all mods.

Just ran into this issue as well.
Using the same PC, same ISP, as when I downloaded it. Solved the issue by downloaded a DRM free version of the executable.
Honestly, if the DRM is worse for legitimate users than for pirates, it should simply be removed. In this case, its apparently quite easy for illegitimate users to defeat your DRM, but that same DRM can prevent legal users from using the software.

The mods do not cause the "version mismatch" issue. It is simply a coincidence. The issue is caused by the DRM.
The only solution for now is to re-download the patch and re-install it. In order to re-download the patch, delete the local copy of the patch first.
We understand that it is very regrettable that we have to use DRM in version 3. We did not do this for version 2 because we thought piracy would not have an extremely big impact and it could even help users to tryout the software first before buying.
However after a while, piracy took such extreme forms that most traffic from Google was directed directly to piracy sites. We got a lot of users asking for support with infected computers caused by these pirated versions, and this started reflect badly on our product.
So that is why we decided to add a DRM to version 3. It is a light version of DRM in the sense that you can run multiple instances of different machines. Also no Internet connection is needed.
However for some reason (we still have not found the cause) on some machines the DRM fails to authenticate the machine. We are trying to solve this issue, because it is not good that paying users have problems with the DRM.
Sincere apologies for this.

Note that this is a temporary solution. After a while (a few days or so) you get the same error again, and have to re-download and re-install the patch again. I have done it at least half a dozen times now. It's an inconvenience, but works.

In my experience DRM issues like this are sometimes caused by changing mac address or clock issues.
-Make sure your clock is not off by alot (some mainboards can be off after a couple days) -Check if your MAC address changes (I don't see a reason why this should happen, but you never know)
Or as you said, just use the DRM free version, nothing wrong with that if you bought the game - you might have problems getting updates tho.
The thing with any DRM is that it's worthless really. XSP 3.0 was up on warez sites, DRM free, like 12 hours after it was launched. With or without DRM, it will turn up on those sites, ready to play - usually with less problems than the DRM version. With or without DRM, people who pirated it will ask questions on the forums, stealing XPAdmins precious time. Also, somebody who can't spare 20$ probably wouldn't have bought the game if the DRM really worked and there is no pirated version.
I felt like the old method of copy protection was better (No free sex till you finished the story, walk through link for registered customers)
I also like to add that I learned about this game (2.1) through a torrent site. Never heard of it before, and I been searching for adult games ALOT and for a long time. I'm sure I'm not the only person who bought this because he found it on a torrent site + tried it + liked it + thought one-time 20 bucks is really cheap for an adult game.

Except that the DRM in version 3 didn't stop the piracy at all. It was still up on torrent sites in under 24 hours after being pre-released to donators. (Also, this means the pirates got to play the 3.0 game before anyone who was upgrading but didn't qualify for the pre-release). Right now, your DRM is ONLY hurting your legitimate users. If you want to fight piracy, you should do it on your web-page. Require a game purchase to access parts of the forum (including the modding section). No matter what you do, pirates WILL distribute illegal copies of your game. The best way to fight them is to create incentives to buy the game instead of trying to stop piracy with DRM.

This is a good idea, I really think that would work more efficiently than any DRM

i agree to that with drm you hurt herself more that defeat pirating
the hackers will be attentive to hack your game
so you more defeat pirating for example drm always on internet
to more you hurt the players
this isolating politicy slows the growth of your concept
the pirating should used beneficial
pirating can act like a promotion
and when you have- a good game
-a good and fair offer for players
-a good community
-a good promotion
so the pirating players thinking about buying the game and /or donate
