Some of the proposed ideas are certainly worth investigating.
I use phpBB for some sites, I know there is a better anti-bot protection in the registration page. Instead of captha use a question and keyword, phpBB comes with this feature built in so no mods required.
For example instead of typing a code name written in an image you have to answer a question. Like "What the name of the game (excluding version number)?" and the only correct answer could be "Xstory Player" or even "Type the five digit serial found at the FAQ page on our website at the bottom.) A question involving some knowledge you only get by looking around at the site.
