I've noticed with nudity in games it is being cut back in curtain games like beyond two souls and all over the place in games like Dante's infreno and when it comes to sex it just depends on the pressure the developer is under to cut it out for a region or platform.
I think you should have the option to get dlc to make it as adult as first intended or different versions in the store.
No reason why everybody can't be happy.

Agreed. And Agreed again. Sex games aren't sold in gaming stores and they aren't "mainstream" either. Doesn't make them any less a commodity that is sold and purchased regularly by the consumers that want it. The only "console" they aim to be on is the oculus rift. Which isn't really a console, its a controller with a hardrive. That's it. What games are produced and playable on it isn't controlled by, nor a reflection of the creators of the rift. it's not nintendo, it's not xbox(microsoft), there is no curated library of games. Hence why creating an adult game for it doesn't make a difference. Adult gaming is a niche market. People interested in adult games will seek them out on certain forums. Review sites are never reliable in this type of marketplace because they're almost always just a paid advert by the creators set up to look like a review. That's why whenever looking for adult games we look to our peers for honest judgments on forums. That's where this niche spreads. That's the only reliable source of genuine insight into what a game will and won't do. When an adult game does well, it's because it's got top thread on all the forums, it has content that can be shared, it offers alot to discuss. That's why i know this game will do very well. It's the perfect mix to fit in that niche and thrive there.

Adult/porn types of purchases are "behind closed doors" in the USA. Even if pretty much everyone under 40 (and a large chunk over 40) has enjoyed porn, or some adult product in their life, their purchase and ownership remains fairly taboo.
Sadly, this exists in a state of self-reinforcement. Its labelled as taboo, so it is obviously taboo.
The result of this is that the online (virtual) market is far FAR larger than the physical market. Compare porn websites with Adult Store porn rentals/purchases, and you get the difference between a multi-billion dollar industry, and one that generates under $100,000 (revenue, not profit) in most states.

However, that aspect is actually fairly simple to solve. It'll just take time. By the time the "youth" of today, who are much more open minded about sexuality (mainly about discussing it and acknowledging it) are retiring, there should be a shift in what is "acceptable".

The greater issue, in my opinion, is quality.
Generally, adult games fall into one of 4 groups.
1) Fan games (ie, adult games using RAGS, RPGMaker, etc)
2) Flash-based games
3) Full-engine games (non-novel form)
4) Erotic novels

Fan games run the entire gamut of quality. Many barely get off the ground before being abandoned. However, these communities are shining examples of what adult games CAN be. Some stellar examples are Slavemaker 3, Hentai Highschool Plus, and Meteor (TADS engine AIF).

Flash games are the core of the problem, as these are technically produced by businesses. They are often charged for (Lesson Of Passion, Vdategames, Meet&Fuck, etc). But their standard of quality is often lacking. Many are little more than rehashes of previously made games with new images and models. They make money simply because there aren't companies out there dedicated to making games that will suck the life out of you (through your cock, typically). Or, at least, not enough of them.

Erotic novels are a primarily Japanese group, but slowly gaining individuals/companies in the US making some (such as Queen Opala and Sunrider). They've even begun appearing on Steam. However, like the flash games, they often suffer from a repetitive nature. In Japan, these games come out several per month (among larger companies - even more if you count the tiny ones that are lower budget/quality), and sell for $20 to $60. However, most follow a very narrow experience (typical to the visual novel genre), with a development focus on the writing and voice acting. While they're a useful part of the adult game industry, the typical visual novel offers very little in terms of inovation. And, more importantly, the genre is unlikely to draw any "new eyes" to adult gaming in general. I mean, they're not even something you can really play with a partner, which pigeonholes them into being used by single guys (and sometimes gals).

Which leaves just the full-engine games. This is where erotic gaming has its chance to shine. However, the sheer budget (time and money) required to develop a proper adult game with actual mechanics other than clicking on "hot spots" is quite large. Back in the age of Leisure Suit Larry, game development was much more about the mechanics and feel of the game. Now, those are still important, but there's a "minimum graphical standard" as well, that is a huge black hole for your company's money. You simply can't get away with a 3D erotic game that has Duke Nukem graphics. So you either have to have a game that is "non graphical" (Corruption of Champions, Flexible Survival, etc), or you have the have the programming/art team in place to make a serious game.

Which takes us all the way back to the initial "taboo" issue.
Major companies (outside Japan) - the ones that can afford to make a quality erotic game in a reasonable timeframe, simply are not willing to touch the genre. Some companies (Rockstar) are willing to skirt dangerously close, and sometimes even get an M rating. But they'll never make *actual* porn.
If just one or two of these companies decided to actually do it, and their reputation lived through it, they'd likely make a BOATLOAD of money, as the demand for quality porn games is there (and largely unfulfilled).

I mean, think of what this game would be like if it had 10x the staff working on it. We'd probably already have 50 NPCs to interact with, 10 full storylines, and more!

One other thing of note, that I'd like to point out:

Kickstarter fees are a couple hundred bucks to list, and 8-10% cut in fees (typically 8% plus $.2 per pledge).
Offbeatr fees scale for the deposit (a goal of $5000 has a $100 deposit), and a 30% cut.

Now, this isn't just Offbeatr being greedy. They even mention the steep rate in their info (blaming financial sites being unwilling to work with "xxx money", and a higher risk of fraud).
But its that financial roadblock (that exists inside and outside crowdfunding) that helps keep adult games from happening.
If you raise $10,000 on Kickstarter, you'll get a bit over $9000.
If you raise $10,000 on Offbeatr, you'll get about $7000. That's a loss of $2000 (22%) that you have to absorb or overcharge by.

@wyldmage

Very good points.

I like to add that so far it has been proven difficult to find good 3d modelers even though it is paid work.
We did not expect this. So it is not only a matter of money.

@tomahawk308

Thanks for the url's, going to take a look at them.

We probably going to have a modding challenge with some nice prices.

But first we have to upgrade the Filemaker to work with Maya 2015.

The average gamer is not young people under 18, so i dont think that mainstream games is aimed at under 18 people. video games have been around for decades, both pc and console gaming. These people are still around and gaming. Also surveys show that the average gamer is in their 30's and are married and has children. So i dont think that the average age of mainstream gamers is the issue.
in fact if smartphones werent around the average age would be much higer actually around 37 years.
