I think the quality shown in GF4E should be possible in real time in the near future.
But it would require a very very fast graphics card and a highly optimized game engine that can render confined scenes in high quality.
Only simulating
10k of hairs requires a lot of resources.
Combining the quality of GF4E, the next gen 'Occulus Rift' and the perfect game engine would however be a match made in heaven.
